Competitions: MakeIT! Wood 2011
MakeIT! Wood is a project-based competition which is mapped to the national curriculum. It aims to familiarise students with the Wood Industry.
The Project
The project asks school students to research engineered timber and construct a model of a laminated wooden beam. Students will develop design proposals for a landscape structure using glulam, research the production processes involved, and understand the environmental issues in the Wood Industry.
Support Material
Free, high-quality learning materials are provided, including information sheets and PowerPoint presentations as well as employer-developed resources.
Curriculum Links
The project is designed to help teach part of the specifications for GCSE and A Level Resistant Materials and Product Design, Diplomas in Construction and the Built Environment and Manufacturing and Product Design, and Double Awards VGCSE’s in Manufacturing and Engineering.
Twinning with Employers
Participating schools will have access to a ‘twinning’ scheme that aims to link schools with local employers, such as local engineered timber manufacturers.
Prizes
The competition has 3 levels of entry (Year 9,10 and 12) and there will be a prize for the national winner in each year group. Participants need to submit their completed project to Proskills by 30th March 2012.
