Competitions: MakeIT! Furniture 2011

What is MakeIT! Furniture?

MakeIT! Furniture is an industry-based project and competition for schools, mapped to the national curriculum and Diplomas. It familiarises students with how furniture is designed and made in the Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors (FFI) Industry through researching and designing products, and investigating the various different aspects of the industry – from sourcing raw materials to producing finished products.

The Project

The project asks students to research and design a product, identifying the type of raw materials used, considering sustainable design and investigating production processes, as well as showing their understanding of environmental issues in the FFI Industry.

Support Material

Free, high-quality learning materials are provided, including information sheets and PowerPoint presentations, as well as employer-developed materials.

Curriculum Links

The project is designed to help teach part of the appropriate specifications for GCSE and A Level Design Technology and Product Design. It is also relevant to the Diplomas in Creative and Media and Manufacturing and Product Design.

Twinning with Employers

Participating schools will have access to a twinning scheme that aims to link schools with local employers, such as local furniture designers, cabinet makers or wood machinists. We will help to link you up with a local employer in the FFI Industry who is keen to support you and your pupils whilst participating in the MakeIT! Furniture project.

Prizes

Student projects can be entered into a national competition for the chance to win prizes. Prize winning entries will be selected by an expert judging panel.
